‘My superpower is a cultural strength. It’s being Aboriginal’
While DailyJocks prides itself on having fans all around the world, it’s our Australian origins - and its active lifestyle - that directly inspires our underwear, swim and sportswear designs.
As such, we are excited to be represented by indigenous community members, such as our campaign star, proud Wiradjuri/Yorta Yorta man, Will. However, sporting a pair of DailyJocks briefs and swim briefs as part of our recent shoot would not have been possible a few years ago.
Will: When I was younger I was overweight and I was teased for being overweight.
It wasn’t until I was 20 years old that I actually went to a pool and swam without a shirt on. For me to be in a photoshoot today in just swimmers is monumental.
It’s been an opportunity for me to stand proud of who I am - and a real milestone for how far I’ve come in my body, self-esteem and confidence.
DailyJocks: What was ‘Teenage Will’ like?
Will: Oh my god, Teenage Will was a very different person. He was overweight. He had depression and self-esteem issues. I think he’d look at Will today and go, “Who the hell is this person?”.
DJs: What would you say are the biggest differences between who you were then and who you are now?
Will: Physically, mentally - a very different person. I’m stronger, I’ve got my confidence. I don’t regret those challenges, I became more confident with everything I went through and it’s just made me who I am today.
DJs: What’s the best thing about being comfortable in your own skin these days?
I love a swim, I love being active, I like being in the outdoors. One of the great things about living near a beach is the opportunity to go and partake. So for me when it comes to DailyJocks and the variety of products that they offer, it's all about the swimwear.
DJs: What do you look for in DailyJocks Swimwear?
Will: For me it’s all about comfort, design, and fit… and just being able to go to a store that offers such a different variety for different occasions.
DJs: What would you say is your superpower?
Will: My superpower is a personal strength. It’s a cultural strength. It’s being Aboriginal. It’s the opportunity to be representational. To still be here after thousands of years through the impacts of colonisation.
DJs: What has been the best thing about working with Daily Jocks?
Will: It’s a great opportunity to be a voice and give visibility to a culture that is still so overlooked, underrepresented, and subject to so many varying stereotypes.
DJs: Why is that representation so important for you?
Will: It’s just about being seen. It’s about being the person I would have liked to have had around when I was younger, or for my cousins to have had. Whether that be participating in shoots like today, or anywhere where I see that our face and voice is missing. I hopefully want to be able to create that opportunity.
